A useful mental map

San José del Cabo lies near the southern end of Baja California Sur and forms part of the wider Los Cabos area with neighboring Cabo San Lucas. Although the two cities are often grouped together, they have distinct centers and are connected by a developed coastal corridor.

For trip planning, it helps to separate four reference points: the historic center of San José del Cabo, the hotel and beach zone, Los Cabos International Airport, and the corridor leading southwest toward Cabo San Lucas. A map downloaded for offline use is advisable because mobile coverage and navigation data may be inconsistent.

About the map

Embedded third-party maps are intentionally not displayed on Bojainsider. Before departure, use a current map provider or official visitor information to confirm road access, closures and your exact destination.

Downtown and the coast

The central district is inland from the shoreline. Beachfront accommodations and coastal roads may therefore be some distance from places described simply as “San José del Cabo.” Check the exact district rather than relying only on the city name.

Airport connection

Los Cabos International Airport serves the region from north of the city. Travel time varies with the route, traffic and the final destination. Confirm the correct terminal and arrange onward transport before arrival when possible.

Driving through Los Cabos

The corridor between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas carries substantial local and visitor traffic. Allow flexibility, avoid assuming short map distances mean short travel times, and save your accommodation details offline. See the driving topic and safer-driving essentials for broader preparation.

How to use this guide

Orient yourself in four steps

Build a simple route plan before relying on turn-by-turn directions.

01

Identify the district

Confirm whether your destination is downtown, near the beach, by the airport or along the corridor.

02

Save it offline

Download the relevant map area and keep the written destination details available without service.

03

Check conditions

Review current road, weather and transport information close to departure.

04

Allow extra time

Traffic, road works and unfamiliar junctions can make a short distance take longer than expected.

Practical questions

Before navigating Los Cabos

Are San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas the same place?

No. They are separate cities within the Los Cabos area, connected by a coastal corridor. Confirm which city and district your booking or activity uses.

Is the airport in central San José del Cabo?

No. Los Cabos International Airport is north of the central district. Allow for onward travel and verify your terminal before leaving.

Can I depend on mobile navigation?

Do not make it your only option. Download maps, save written directions and keep key booking details available offline.

How accurate are estimated driving times?

They are only a starting point. Traffic, construction, weather and the precise entrance to a property can all affect the journey.

Should I drive after dark?

When possible, plan unfamiliar routes in daylight. Visibility, road markings and unexpected hazards can make night driving more demanding.

Where can I find more regional information?
